Carrels, Lockers, & Faculty Studies

Carrels are available for assignment to graduate students only. They are located on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor of the library. Carrels are not available for law, business, and medical faculty, staff, and students. Latin American Studies graduate students must contact the Latin American Library for carrel assignments. All materials in the carrels must be properly checked out at the Circulation desk. The carrels will be inspected periodically and any uncharged and non-circulating materials will be removed and returned to the shelves.

Personal belongings of value should not be left in the carrels. Carrels assignments are made at the Circulation Desk. A refundable deposit is required.

Study Carrel Regulations

  • No food may be stored in the carrels. Only drinks in acceptable library containers may be brought into the carrel.
  • Library materials may be checked to the carrel for an extended period with a carrel loan card. Carrels may be opened regularly for inspection by authorized Library personnel.
  • Carrel holders leaving New Orleans for a semester or longer must release their carrels for assignment during their absence, with the understanding that a carrel will be reassigned upon their return.
  • Unauthorized students are not allowed in the carrel area, nor are they allowed in the carrel area, nor are they allowed to store materials in carrels. Carrels should not be used as an office or conference room.
  • Smoking is not permitted in the carrel area.
  • A deposit of $25.00 is required for keys or padlock. Replacement cost of a lost key is $2.50. Replacement cost of a key and new door lock is $50.00. Keys and padlocks must be returned by the time this agreement expires or the deposit will be forfeited.
  • No library furniture or equipment should be moved from or placed into a carrel. If you are missing a chair, lamp etc, please speak to the carrel coordinator.
  • The air conditioning ducts should not be covered.
  • Report any damage to the library furniture or equipment, repairs or replacements of light bulbs, or other problems to the carrel coordinator.
  • The HTML cannot guarantee the security of personal belongings in any study space.

Failure to comply with the above will be cause for immediate cancellation of this assignment and will be grounds for refusing the student a carrel.

Assignments are from September 15 to September 15 of the following year. All carrels must be renewed yearly. Failure to renew may result in removal from the carrel.

PLEASE NOTE: When a carrel has not been renewed all personal items will be stored and held for 30 days after which time they will be disposed of. Please be sure to clear your carrel before you give your carrel up.



Locker Regulations


Lockers are available to any registered student on a first-come, first served basis. Lockers are located on the basement, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floor. You may apply for a locker at the Circulation Desk or online.

No food, drinks in non-approved library containers or improperly checked-out books may be put into lockers. Library materials may be checked to the locker for an extended period. Lockers will be opened regularly for inspection by authorized library personnel.

Locker holders leaving New Orleans for a semester or longer must release their locker for assignment during their absence, with the understanding that a locker may be reassigned upon their return. Unauthorized students are not allowed to use the lockers, nor are they allowed to store materials in lockers.

A deposit of $10.00 is required for padlocks. Padlocks must be returned by the time the agreement expires or the deposit will be forfeited.
