The following categories of material are to be sent for binding at time of cataloging, with exceptions as stated below:
- All Music Scores
- All Paperback Monographs whose pages have not been cut
- All Reference Material
- All material that is under 1/4", as these are prone to easy theft and are more vulnerable to damage

Items not sent for binding at time of cataloging:
- Architecture Library
- Jazz Archive
- Koch Collection
- Louisiana Collection
- Math Library
- RARE (any) Collection
- UMI Photocopies of these are not bound (including LAL)
- RUSH or IN-PROCESS REQUEST materials are not sent for binding at time of cataloging.
Therefore, as with hardback books, a single barcode inside the back cover is needed.
- Preservation will review any material in cataloging that may be of questionable strength or durability before it is to be bound. A shelf or book truck will be set aside for this purpose.
All paperback materials not being sent for binding at time of cataloging will be sent to the Preservation Department after they circulate for the second time under the "Bind after 2nd Circulation" practice.
